Found, Another TinType!
Among my Dad’s band pictures was this tintype of my great grandmother Harriet Melven-Jeter.
Alternate spellings include Melvin, Melville, and Geder.
Why the frown?
She’s got the ‘rock’ on her finger.
Great grandfather James Jeter must have been doing well.
Or, was this portrait taken after he passed in 1882?
A clue might be in the dress she’s wearing.
What do you think of the restoration?
Does it maintain the integrity of the original?
I did some toning in Photoshop, however, I avoided going the full colorize route because then you are falsifying the skin
and fabric color (was the dress blue, black, brown, green or whatever?).
I think Harriet stands out better and will look good matted and framed.
Anyways, that’s what I do; clean up the images of our Ancestors.

Great image of an obviously great lady! I wish I could find more pictures of my ancestors of this vintage! Somebody must have them–I just haven’t found out who!

Craig,
So much of our history lives in these photographs.
They speak to us, tell us volumes.
We just need to be in a space where we can hear what they are sayin’.

Hi George,
Can you give me an estimated date for this photo I have?
I have a photo of my great-great grandmother Jane (Travick) Garnett born in 1864 to former slaves Frank and Mary Travick in Bellville, TX.
I’ve been trying to figure out what year this might have been taken for sometime now.

Hello Terrance,
First, your photo is a treasure!
I’m guessing that Jane is between 30 & 40 years old.
I’m basing my guess on the hair style and the dress.
She may be younger.
Are there any other clues such as the photographer’s name or studio or
any notations on the back?

I also though Jane was about 30 in this photo, unfortunately I copied the photo from a larger copy. My grandmother’s first cousin had the original photo and for her mother’s birthday back in the early 1970’s decided to have the photo enlarged. She has no idea where the original is though.
Thank You for the info on Maureen.

Looks good, not so much a frown as a bemused expression.
